The Federation of Alver Valley Infant and Nursery and Junior Schools, based in Gosport, are seeking new governors to take an active role, and have a commitment to helping children achieve their very best in all aspects of school life. We believe it is our responsibility to empower individuals to have high aspirations in creating a school community that shines. Challenge, resilience, independence, and confidence form the backbone of our drive to excellence.
As a governor you will attend meetings and be prepared to ask questions after having read the associated paperwork and visiting the school. You will be expected to attend training and may have a specific responsibility assigned to you; for example, Development and Training, Safeguarding, or Health and Safety. No one governor is expected to know it all. The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out the duties amongst its members, and be able to take decisions as a group. This board-level position gives a fantastic real-world experience of leadership roles and increasing skills, all whilst helping the local community.
Governing bodies have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and direction;
- Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.
At Alver Valley Schools, the Governing body meets once per month (excluding August), on a Thursday evening. We would be particularly interested in people who have a background in education, finance, management, HR, or health and safety, to help support and advise. However, we warmly welcome anyone with the enthusiasm and interest to effectively challenge and support our school.
New governors will be provided with an induction, a tour of the school, a meeting with a member of the Senior Leadership team of the school and Chair or Vice Chair of Governors, as well as access to a mentor in their first 6 months. External training is also available and encouraged. For an informal discussion about the role please contact the school in the first instance or visit Hampshire Governors Services for further information here.
