Update from the Arts Council

After a short rest to recruit new members, the Arts Council met recently for a welcome, reflection, and review session ahead of making plans for the future.

Children reflected on what they had achieved and experienced already as the Arts Council, remembering such highlights as the whole school Arts Project that the Arts Council planned and delivered last year and the exhibition at the Yellow Edge Art Gallery in the summer with submissions from every year group. Other highlights were previous Arts competitions, trips to the beach, Theatre and Gallery trips, and the various art mediums they have explored in our sessions.

Children then started to think about ideas for the future. They came up with the idea of launching a whole school (and they mean the whole school) art competition linked to World Art Day, which takes place on Monday 15th April – full details are below. Of course, all this discussion took place alongside some hands-on art inspired by the competition theme that the children decided on: Trees. This included making trees from clay and sketching trees using lines and patterns creatively.

Children, staff, parents, governors, and members of the community are all challenged to create a tree in any medium you like: crayon, pencil, paint, digital art, collage, clay, the choice is yours. The Arts Council will gather all the entries to share in a pop-up Art Gallery on Friday 19th April where we will display a forest of trees. Prizes will be awarded for favourite works of art. Please can all artwork be brought to the school office, clearly labelled with either the child’s name and age, for children’s entries, or name and ‘adult entry’ for adult entries, by Monday 15th April.
