Valuing Diversity & Inclusion within our school community

We uphold equal opportunities for all our pupils when delivering our curriculum and extra-curricular activities, promoting respect, understanding and tolerance of others regardless of their age, ability, size, sex, background, religion, or nationality. We celebrate differences and encourage a better understanding of our society, supporting the development of the whole child including their well-being.

Talking about differences

From the early years, and all the way through a child’s school life, we talk about and celebrate difference. By recognising that everyone is different children learn to embrace those differences, showing curiosity and support, and respecting one another in the process. We use language that is age appropriate and progresses throughout the school year. Any discriminatory language is taken seriously and dealt with. Parents are kept updated.

Encouraging Empathy and Kindness

Our pro-social, pro-learning approach to developing positive learning behaviours – The Empowerment Approach – also supports children to recognise that we are all different and have different skills and needs. The Empowerment Approach supports children to develop empathy towards others as they consider how they can meet their own and others needs in any given situation in ways that are ‘good for me, good for you and good for everyone’. This is built into the school day when classes plan and prep for situations that arise.. The development of empathy and kindness towards others is also a theme in assemblies, discussed in planned activities and explicitly modelled by teachers in their interactions. One of our mantras for adults in school is ‘persistent, consistent with a bucketful of kindness’.
